Pros and Cons of the new Stadium

In 2009, the new Yankee Stadium opened its doors to the public.  The Yankees went on to win their 27th championship in just their first year in the new building.  While many fans enjoy the stadium, most would say it is not the same as the old grounds.  Here are some pros and cons of the new stadium.

Pro: Bathrooms/Concession Stands

The new stadium has a restroom to fan ratio of 1:60 compared to 1:89 in the old stadium.  This allows fans to get in and out quicker to make sure they are not missing that next Gary Sanchez at-bat.  Not to mention they also seem cleaner.  There are now 272 concession stands compared to 219 in the old one, making for shorter lines there as well.

Con: The Prices

The prices at the old stadium were not cheap, but with expensive construction of a new ballpark, prices are only going to increase.  Food, tickets, and parking can vary but all are higher in the new stadium.  Long gone are the days when you can randomly stop at the park for affordable entertainment.  For a family of four to see a game, it can cost $200-$300 between all the travel and expenses.

Pro: Amenities

With new restaurants, scoreboard, bars, and shops, the new stadium has the bells and whistles that almost every fan wants.  Whether it is before or after the game, you can kill hours while staying inside the stadium.

Con: The Proximity

The new stadium is incapable of being as loud as the old one.  With the upper deck pushed back, and seats funneling outward to fit more fans, the decibel level can never reach the intensity that the old stadium had.  The Yankee’s needed a new stadium, but the new one will never have the same magic the old one did.

May Home Game Promotions

I find it difficult sometimes to find out what promotions are coming up for home games, so I figured I’ll consolidate them all here for anyone seeking that information. So here’s the promotions that the Yankees are running for their first 5 games in May:

Saturday May 7th vs. Boston: Sunscreen Day

Hopefully there’s a need for sunscreen that day. The way the weather has been so far this spring, who knows? It could be snowing.

Monday May 9th vs. Kansas City: Cap Night

Cap day sounds a lot more appealing than sunscreen day. According to the Yankees website it looks like a nice green Yankees cap, that every fan in attendance will receive.

Tuesday May 10th vs. Kansas City: Dunkin Donuts Card Night

It doesn’t say how much the card is worth, but I imagine it being for $5. Definitely a solid promotion as most people will be able to put it to good use

Thursday May 12th vs. Kansas City: Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center Commemorative Bookmark Night – Free Museum Admission Ticket

This is a nice promotion. Maybe not so much for the bookmark that will likely never get used, but for the free ticket to the museum. I’ve never been, but it looks like a good place to bring the kids.

Friday May 13th vs. Chicago: Yankees Reusable Tote Bag Night

You have to love reusable tote bags. I use them all the time (and also lose them all the time) so it’s great to have as many as possible.

My Favorite Yankee Stadium Food

Yankee Stadium has some of the best food I’ve ever eaten at a ballpark. Getting a bite to eat at the stadium was always one of the things I looked forward to the most. These are my 3 favorite places to grab food at the stadium.

Parm: Home of the best chicken parm sandwich I have ever eaten. They also serve a great Italian turkey sandwich. Parm is located between gates 4 and 6.

Lobel’s of New York: Lobel’s is a butcher shop that serves a wonderful steak sandwich. While not cheap ($15 a sandwich), it’s most certainly worth it. Lobel’s is located in sections 134 and 322.

Brother Jimmy’s BBQ: Who said you can only get good BBQ in the south? Their pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches are both to die for. Their fried pickles are great too! Find them in sections 133, 201, 214, and 320A.

2016 Season Keys to Success

New York Yankees Mark Teixeira

Source: Wikipedia

The Yankees have been disappointing the past 3 seasons. They missed the playoffs for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014, which hasn’t happened since 1994, and this past season they lost to the Astros in the AL Wild Card game. However, I think 2016 will be a turnaround year for the Yankees. In my opinion, the Yankees have two keys to success for the upcoming season: they have reliable starting pitching and this could be a big year for Mark Teixeira.

Even though the Yanks will have one of the best bullpens in the league next season, I think a key to their success will be their starting pitching. The less they have to rely on their bullpen, the better they will be.

As for Teixeira, he’s been less than stellar the past couple seasons, and needs to come out and show the Yankees and their fans why he’s being paid over 22.5 million dollars. If Teixeira can have a 40 HR, 120 RBI Season, I think the Yankees will win the AL East with ease.

Why I Love the Yankee Stadium Bleachers

I’ve been to many Yankee games and sat in many different sections. I’ve been around the ballpark enough to be able to say with confidence that the best seat in the house is in the bleachers.

While obviously not the best view of the action, the bleachers provide one heck of an atmosphere for fans. Whether it’s the chant of the players’ names before the first pitch or the booing of a fan wearing opposing colors, there is always some form of entertainment going on other than the game.

In addition to the atmosphere, it’s a lot of fun to get out there a couple hours before the game and try to snag home run balls during batting practice. I caught my first ball off a Derek Jeter batting practice home run back in ’97, and it’s a moment I will never forget.

If you’ve never done it before, I strongly suggest giving the bleachers a shot during your next visit to Yankee Stadium.
