‘Different Feel’ at Spring Training

In a recent interview on MLB.com, Steinbrenner discussed the excitement about the club’s mix of young and veteran players for the 2017 season.

“It’s a great mix and I think the veterans are going to be great dealing with the kids, mentoring them. We’ve seen that in the past. But they’ve got to prove themselves, a number of these guys. This is their big chance and they’re going to get it this year.”

Celebrating 10 Seasons with Brett Gardner

Brett Gardner is now the longest-tenured player with the Yankees this season, starting is 10th season in pinstripes.

Along with the title comes the coveted corner locker, which was previously used by Carlos Beltran.

Gardner hit .261/.351/.362 with 22 doubles, six triples, seven homers and 41 RBIs in 148 games last year, winning his first Rawlings Gold Glove Award.

Gardner was asked what advice he would offer to the new crop of talent rising through the Yankees pipeline.

“Just don’t ever be complacent,” Gardner said. “As a young guy coming up, I had so many veterans to look to, so many future Hall of Famers. Even guys like Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon, just taking me under their wing, I’ll be forever grateful to those guys for treating me the way that they did.

“As an older guy now, you try to remember that and remember how to treat the younger guys, the kind of things that they need and advice that they need and direction they need to not just further their careers, but help the Yankees win at the big league level.”

A-Rod as a Special Guest Instructor

In February during Spring Training, Alex Rodriguez stepped into his new role as a special guest instructor. The former Yankee retired 6 months ago, and now is helping to guide the next generation of players.

“I’m in a unique position from all the things I’ve done in this game, both good and bad,” Rodriguez said. “I learned my biggest lessons with some of my mistakes, and they were big ones. … There’s so much that is expected here in New York, and it’s so difficult to play in New York. As staff and mentors, that’s the best thing we can do is to get them ready for what’s expected. Because it is a handful.”

Grading the Aroldis Chapman Deal

The Yankees have signed closer Aroldis Chapman to a 5-year $86 million deal. The closer was traded to the Yankees prior to this past season and was dealt to the Cubs at the deadline in late July. The return of the closer has some fans excited and others worried due to the money. This move was the correct decision by the Yankees as they have cleared cap room by trading away Brian McCann. Contracts by Beltran and Teixeira are now off the books and this upcoming year Alex Rodriguez’s and CC Sabathia’s contracts will expire.

ChapmanDealThe Yankees had money to spend and this move does not hinder their plan of this “Youth Movement” as it does not block or inhibit any of the Baby Bombers from developing.  Dellin Betances also struggled in the closer role and the signing of Chapman will allow him to return to his 8th inning role where he found much more success. While Chapman may lose some life on his fastball over the next few years, he could slide into different roles, perhaps drop to a 7th or 8th inning reliever. Every free agent signing comes with risk, at least with Chapman he has proven he can be successful in New York and there are many different roles he can fill to help this team win over the next five years.

Yankees Best Offseason Move: Not Making a Desperate One

The Yankees are set to be the team to beat in 2017 with position players including Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge, Jorge Mateo, Gleyber Torres, and Tyler Austin all under 25 years old. While the Yankees do not have top-tier pitching prospects,  they do have depth with players such as Jordan Montgomery, Dillon Tate, Chance Adams, Justus Sheffield, James Kaprielian, Albert Abreu, and Ian Clarkin with other young arms in the majors already. This is why the Yankees made the wise decision to not pick up a starting pitcher in free agency.  It was a thin market so let’s look at why the Yankees made the right decision to pass on certain free agents.

Rich Hill: He wanted a multi-year deal and got that with 3-years for $48 Million with the Dodgers. He is always hurt and with no long-term proven success, he was not worth signing through his age 39 season.

Ivan Nova: Inconsistent and seemed to need a change of scenery. While he was very effective with the Pirates this does not mean it would transition back to the Bronx where Ivan struggled.  He could very well have a better career in Pittsburgh than New York (See A.J. Burnett).

Charlie Morton: He pitched only 4 games in 2016, and has not had an ERA under 3.70 since 2013.  A player on the downward trend is not worth $14 million per year and the Yankees are better off using Bryan Mitchell or Luis Severino.

I would have like to have seen the Yankees go after Jeremy Hellickson but with him surprisingly taking Phillies qualifying offer, he was off the market.  With Masahiro Tanaka, C.C. Sabathia, and Michael Pineda looks to be in the starting rotation, and a bunch of young arms competing for 2 rotation spots, the Yankees were wise to not overpay any of these free agents.
