A-Rod as Yankees Special Advisor

As part of his exit with the Yankees, Alex Rodriguez is set to become a special advisor instructor with the team.  Rodriguez will be released by the Yankees from his player contract in the middle of August so he can sign the new contract allowing him to serve in this role through Dec. 31, 2017.

Steinbrenner had recently met with Rodriguez where he was told there would be no more at-bats for him as a Yankee, not this season or the next.  Instead of having Rodriguez sitting on the bench for the remainder of the season, Steinbrenner offered him this advisory role and Rodriguez would still get paid the $27 million owed him for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Rodriguez announced his decision to accept the new contract in a tearful news conference at Yankee Stadium.  He acknowledged how the difficult the past few weeks had been, the embarrassment of sitting on the bench, and his gratitude for the solution at hand.

The Yankees have employed former players in advisory roles in the past. It is a consultant-type position and it has included different responsibilities for different types of players.  Mariano Rivera served as a spring training advisor after his retirement.  Reggie Jackson served as an advisor to the Yankees for a number of years as did Yogi Berra.  Billy Martin, who had well known clashes with the late George Steinbrenner, also served as an advisor.

For A-Rod, his advisory position will be spent with younger players with the goal of teaching them the finer points of being a professional New York Yankees ballplayer.  This would be a gift, that many say Rodriguez has already been providing.

What do you think?  Does A-Rod have the abilities to become a good advisor to the team?
